It is supported by a solid and complementary team whose action is based on the principles of transparency and integrity. I offer my expertise as a climatologist on an independent basis, to support this enterprise whose mission it is to maximise reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and to effectively contribute to limiting the extent of climate change.”
Photo : Karla SchoetersKarla Schoeters (’69) is working for the Vlaamse Instelling voor Technologisch Onderzoek (VITO) within the energy and climate department. She has been Director of CAN Europe for 6 years and Board member of CAN International. CAN stands for Climate Action Network. It is a network representing more than 200 NGOs, of which 100 in Europe.
She has an excellent knowledge of the work of the European institutions and NGOs on climate change. She has build up her expertise as scientific researcher in Belgium (Flanders) and abroad (China). She combines her strong scientific background with her vision on the global challenges of climate change en will always take into account the implications of sustainable development.
"I have decided to join CLIMACT scientific committee to provide my scientific expertise on an independent basis. I wish to support the ambition of CLIMACT which is to reduce as much as possible the CO2 emissions. I support the offsetting projects of CLIMACT because they take into account the sustainable development dimensions."

Serge de Gheldere is Al Gore’s ‘climate change ambassador’ in Belgium. In 2007, he gave more than 120 conferences on global warming to a variety of audiences ranging from schools to boards of directors from major Belgian companies. He has been involved for many years in the fight against global warming and the promotion of sustainable development, especially by giving advice on renewable energy, the energy efficiency of buildings and the development of strategies to allow companies to optimise their ‘return on environment’.
He is a visiting lecturer and member of the board of directors of the ‘Groep T’ college (Leuven), and has given seminars at the universities of Yale and Stanford (USA). “CLIMACT’s aim is to contribute in a pragmatic, accessible and credible way to the fight against climate change. It is supported by an energetic and competent team.”
“I have decided to contribute to CLIMACT’s success by offering my expertise to its scientific committee to independently guarantee that the solutions it proposes effectively and sustainably contribute to facing the climate challenge.”
He worked as a barrister in Brussels and then served the European Communities Court of Justice as a public auditor. As such, he was led to deal with several cases in the domain of environmental law.
He is a recognized expert in the European system for exchanging quotas of greenhouse gas emissions.
A civil engineer, with an MBA from Berkeley, he acquired an expertise in project management and ISO certification at Asea Brown Boveri, a company active in the domain of energy and the environment.
He also worked for Cisco systems in US and Europe as a Finance manager in charge with financial control, operation and process reengineering.
Hugues is certified Bilan Carbone ™ auditor by ADEME (France).
He's commercial engineer and worked in the marketing and sale of consumer products at Unilever and Sara Lee, where he also acquired experience in general management.
A civil engineer, he worked as management consultant at A.T. Kearney in strategy (corporate and functional) and in operations (complexity management and procurement). He also worked in microfinance both on the field in Chile and in the UN headquarters.
