How do we calculate CO2 emissions?

To calculate CO2 emissions based on energy consumption for housing and transport, our calculator uses conversion methods and factors from acknowledged sources for each country. We have also taken certain hypotheses into account to adapt these calculations to the interface of our calculator to make it more intuitive.

A few enlightening

  • currently, the world emits approximately 28 billion TCE a year in the atmosphere: 77 % of these emissions are CO2, while the rest is mainly made up of CH4 and NO2
  • an average Belgian emits 11.9 TCE a year
  • an average European emits 8.8 TCE a year
  • an average American emits 19.9 TCE a year
  • 13 % of CO2 emissions are due to road transport
  • 13 % of CO2 emissions come from residential buildings
