#0751: Sanquhar and Delta Small
Hydro Power

Emission reductions from this project comes from two small hydro power plants located along a river in Sri Lanka. With a capacity of 3.2 MW, the two power plants supply 8 000 000 kWh / year, equivalent to the consumption of 13000 inhabitants.

  0751: Sanquhar and Delta Small Hydro Power Projects. Two small-scale, run of river hydropower plants in Sri Lanka, owned by Hydro Power Free Lanka, a joint venture between Pussellawa Plantation Ltd and Eco-F Limited. Each plant has an installed capacity of 1.6 MW.

  Projects are in located in Kandy District, Central Province of Sri Lanka. (map)

• Main contributions to sustainable development
  • The production of renewable electricity by the project displaces production by Ceylon Electricity Board’s existing marginal thermal power stations that operate on fuel oil or diesel. Consequently, the project reduces emissions of NOx and SOx from diesel/fuel oil-generated electricity
  • Increase employment and skill development opportunities for local people as powerhouse operators.
  • Contribution by the project to road maintenance and repair. Action has been taken to provide material and workmanship to the villagers living in the neighborhood of Delta plant to improve housing.
  • The project has led the local stakeholders to obtain improvement of local housing conditions. Project proponents are financing schemes to improve sanitation, healthcare and education as well as the living conditions of women workers.
